because where you shop matters

Retail theft is getting heavy media coverage right now. Organised shoplifting, self-checkout fraud, brazen in-store incidents — the stories are everywhere. If you’re running an independent retail shop, it’s hard not to feel unsettled by it.

But news stories describe trends across thousands of stores. They say nothing specific about yours.

Before you spend money on cameras, security tags, or new procedures, find out what your own numbers say. The tool you need is already in your POS software.

Run a stocktake

A stocktake compares what your POS system says you should have on the shelf against what’s physically there. The gap is shrinkage. Some of that will be theft. Some will be supplier errors, damaged stock, or POS mistakes.

You won’t know the breakdown straight away — but you’ll know the dollar value. That’s the number that matters. It tells you whether you’re dealing with a minor variance or a genuine loss worth investigating.

Don’t assume the worst before you look

Retailers who run their first proper stocktake in years are often surprised. Shrinkage is sometimes lower than expected. Or it’s concentrated in one category — a specific product type, a particular part of the store. That’s useful information. It points you toward a real problem rather than a vague one.

Without data, it’s easy to over-invest in the wrong solution. Security spend based on anxiety rather than evidence rarely fixes anything.

How to do it in Tower Systems

Tower Systems POS software includes stocktake tools that let you run a full store count or focus on a single department or category. You can do it during trading hours or after close. Once the count is complete, the software compares it against your recorded inventory and produces a variance report.

That report shows what’s missing, which category it’s in, and what it’s worth at cost. It’s a practical starting point for any conversation about theft, loss, or stock management.

Make it a habit, not a one-off

One stocktake gives you a snapshot. Regular stocktakes — monthly for high-risk categories, quarterly for slower lines — give you a pattern. You’ll catch a growing problem early. You’ll also see when something you’ve changed is actually working.

Theft is real. The media coverage isn’t invented. But your shop is not the average of every retail store in the country. Get your own data first, then decide what needs fixing.
